2017 Lithology 'Beckstoffer Las Piedras Vineyard' Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley

This incredibly sumptuous and satisfying Cabernet does justice to the impeccable vineyards behind it. Deep, rich and explosive, it will knock your socks off with its textural intensity and trademark mineral savoriness beneath all that unctuous, bold fruit.

When he decided to establish a family domaine in his own name in the Napa Valley, international wine entrepreneur Alejandro Bulgheroni did everything right. The details are simply dizzying. First, he bought a vineyard and winery just south of Meadowood Resort in St. Helena, where Bill Harlan and his team made some of their wines before he moved into new facilities on the west side of Oakville. He hired Jim Barbour, a Rutherford native and veteran of over 40 Napa Valley harvests to manage this Alejandro Bulgheroni Estate Vineyard. Barbour has also been responsible for tending the vines of such luminaries as Hundred Acre, Checkerboard, Gandona, Blankiet, and Grace Family. There would be no question that Bulgheroni would also purchase fruit from Andy Beckstoffer’s jewel box vineyards, such as To Kalon in Oakville, and Las Piedras and Dr. Crane in St. Helena. The winemaking team had to be the best in the world. Bulgheroni hired superstar winemaker Philippe Melka [Dominus, Pétrus] and his onetime mentor Michel Rolland to oversee oenology. Day to day winemaking is handled by Matt Sands, an alum of harvests at Screaming Eagle and Bryant Family. Critical acclaim inevitably followed. In December of last year, Robert Parker scored every 2015 and 2016 Bulgheroni wine above 95, with the 2016 Lithology Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer To Kalon scoring a potential 100 points.

From a rocky vineyard just west of Dr. Crane, the 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Lithology Beckstoffer Las Piedras Vineyard is a beautiful, elegant, mineral-laced wine that offers full-bodied richness and depth as well as outstanding length. Complex notes of red and black currants, dried flowers, crushed rocks, and flowery incense dominate the bouquet. It's an incredibly sumptuous, satisfying Cabernet that has both complexity and richness.

James Suckling

Loads of blackberries, crushed black pepper and black tea. Crushed stones. Medium to full body with firm, juicy tannins and a lightly austere finish that gives this wine energy and focus. Drinkable now, but better in 2022.

Wine Advocate

Fruit for this was harvested on October 5—it's 100% Cabernet Sauvignon fermented in stainless and puncheon and aged in 70% new French oak. The 2017 Lithology Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Las Piedras is very deep garnet-purple in color and a little stubbornly mute at this youthful stage, but with coaxing, it offers up crushed black and red plums, fresh black berries and warm cassis plus hints of forest floor, candied violets and baker's chocolate with a waft of kirsch. Full-bodied, the palate has a solid backbone of ripe, grainy tannins and beautiful freshness supporting the energetic fruit, finishing on a lingering mineral note.

Wine Spectator

Enticing, featuring succulent plum, blackberry and boysenberry flavors, melded to black licorice and apple wood accents. Juicy energy carries the finish as the fruit takes an encore over a subtle sassafras note. A showy style that pulls it off. Drink now through 2030.

The 2017 Lithology Las Piedras is tannic and imposing, as wines from this St. Helena site tend to be. Black cherry, graphite, spice, licorice, blackberry jam and leather open up with time in the glass. The Piedras is easily the most reticent wine in this range. Accordingly, it needs time in the cellar to be at its best and most expressive.
