Even among all the glamor and excess that define modern day Napa Valley, family and relationships still matter. When Mac Watson was dragging hoses as an assistant winemaker at Rudd Estate in Oakville, he had something of an epiphany. Having been born and raised in St. Helena, he was well-versed in the wine business. In fact, back in the early ‘80s, his mother had started the Macauley label with a highly regarded late harvest Sauvignon Blanc. But realizing early on that the sales and marketing elements of the business were a huge mountain to climb, the label essentially vanished. With a little help from his friends, Mac successfully resuscitated the brand. Enlisting growing partners like farming legends David Abreu and Andy Beckstoffer, and calling on his childhood buddy Kirk Venge, Macauley has roared back to life as a top-tier Cabernet producer.
