2017 Paul Hobbs 'Beckstoffer To Kalon' Cabernet Sauvignon 6pk OWC

Paul Hobbs built his reputation through collaborating with the very best, and Beckstoffer is basically the king when it comes to meticulous vineyard management. Beckstoffer To Kalon fruit is in excellent hands her, according to James Suckling: “This is a solid and powerful To Kalon with blueberries, currants and minerals.” One of the more decadent wines of the vintage, with plenty of exotic spice notes and a lovely, plush texture, this will want a couple more years in the cellar to reach its full potential – and what better way to keep that investment safe than in this 6pk OWC?

The name Paul Hobbs is synonymous with fine California winemaking. Born into a farming family in New York, Paul borrowed early life experience to reinvent modern winemaking by employing a classical approach that pays the utmost attention to quality farming and treating the fruit minimally so that it can convey a true sense of place. While his uncanny ability to ferret out unique and expressive vineyards and undiscovered regions has only enhanced his reputation, a resume that includes winemaking stints at Opus One and Simi, as well as consulting projects with Peter Michael, Fisher Vineyards and Lewis has helped position himself as one of California's best guiding hands in the cellar. All the wine projects lucky enough to be associated with Paul Hobbs are farmed sustainably. Furthermore, crop yields are kept low to boost flavor intensity, grapes are sorted by hand, juice is turned to wine with the aid of native yeasts and the wines are bottled without fining or filtration. Paul's reach spans far and wide, with his own wineries Paul Hobbs and CrossBarn in California, and Viña Cobos in Argentina. Word on the street is that he's even got his hands on grapes from Chile, Uruguay, France and Armenia. He's got us wondering, what will this globetrotting winemaker do next?

James Suckling

This is a solid and powerful To Kalon with blueberries, currants and minerals. Hint of lead pencil. Full-bodied, yet reserved. Steely, very polished and structured. Needs three to five years. Try after 2023.

Wine Advocate

Deep purple-black in color, the 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard comes bounding out of the glass with exuberant plum preserves, Christmas cake and chocolate-covered cherries notes, followed by hints of potpourri, Chinese five spice, incense and dried mint. Medium to full-bodied, the palate shows a more decadent side to this vintage, packed with exotic spices and black fruit preserves, with a plush texture and refreshing lift to the finish.

Wine Spectator

Juicy and compact, featuring a racy-edged core of cassis and fig fruit flavors, this shows good drive, with light bramble, sage, bay leaf and olive notes running around. A well-built, muscular style, showing a great grounding in terroir, exhibiting a grippy, warm gravel edge on the finish. Best from 2022 through 2037.

The 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard is a gorgeous, inviting wine, but it is also going to need a few years in bottle to shed some of its formidable tannins. Black cherry, plum, graphite, pencil shavings, crme de cassis and menthol open up in the glass, but only with great reluctance. Patience will be the key here.
