2017 Robert Mondavi Cabernet Sauvignon Oakville

(Net Item - no discounts apply)

Powerful depths and textural richness define this velvet seductress from Oakville. 76% Cabernet Sauvignon is kissed by Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Merlot. Most of the grapes in this come from the hallowed To Kalon Vineyard, famed for its ability to deliver impeccable fruit. While other wines of the vintage felt the threat of nearby fires, this bold beauty was safe in the cellar before flames lit the sky.

Robert Mondavi founded his namesake winery in 1966 at the age of 53. He wasn't flush with cash, but he had a big dream. He envisioned that a more gracious lifestyle can be lead through the appreciation of wine, food and art. When he came to Oakville in the Napa Valley he saw the land upon which he could build his dream winery and make wines to stand shoulder to shoulder with the best wines from around the globe. Well, the Italian farm boy made good, launching what would become the first major winery in the Napa Valley after the end of Prohibition. Robert Mondavi Winery revolutionized the world of American wine by focusing on quality grape cultivation and embracing hospitality as a part of the wine business. At their Oakville estate, styled in homage to the missions of early California, the warm spirit of hospitality is ever present. Drop by, they'd love to see you.

The 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Oakville offers more blackcurrants and cassis fruit as well as a touch of chocolate and espresso, medium to full body, some earth and tobacco notes, ripe yet present tannins, and outstanding length. Based on 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Petit Verdot, 8% Cabernet Franc, and 2% each of Malbec and Merlot, it’s well worth drinking any time over the coming decade or more.

Wine Spectator

This pushes a mix of zesty loganberry and boysenberry fruit to the fore, with hints of anise, mesquite and sweet spice filling in behind. Brambly grip and a toasty note hold the finish, leaving an ever-so-slightly firm edge, but there's enough fruit to keep this going.

James Suckling

Plenty of blackcurrants with hints of toasted oak and wet earth. Full body. Medium, velvety tannins and a juicy finish. Lightly fluid. Soft and easy.

The 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon (Oakville), all from To Kalon, is a pretty, mid-weight wine laced with cedar, tobacco, dried flowers, mint and sweet pipe tobacco. Medium in body and nuanced, the 2017 offers a good bit of immediacy in the somewhat lithe, compact style of the year. This is the least expressive and most compact wine in the range today - let's see what time in bottle brings.

Wine Enthusiast

With 12% Petit Verdot, 12% Cabernet Franc and smaller amounts of Malbec and Merlot, this wine is thick and intensely concentrated in dense red fruit. Supple tannins are dotted in leather, clove and toasted oak.
