Legendary winemaker Nils Venge is the talent behind Saddleback Cellars, founded in the heart of Napa Valley back in 1976. Nils is universally regarded as one of the foremost pioneers of California wine, having earned the first ever 100-Point score for an American wine. You might say wine was in his blood since birth, with Danish parents who ran a wine and liquor import company in Southern California. He earned a BS in viticulture from UC Davis in 1967 and, following a tour of duty in Vietnam, moved to Napa to pursue a future in wine. He’s worked for Charles Krug, Sterling, Mount Eden and Groth over his storied career, but Saddleback is all his own. This small winery off the beaten path in Oakville has his full attention these days.
