“Les Pierres Seches” isn’t a district, but a nod to the dry-stone walls supporting terraced vines on the northern hillsides of Saint Joseph. Hand-picked grapes are fermented in open vats for three weeks before they move to barriques for 18 months. This is a fresh, precise Syrah with a fruity nose and bursts of fruit on the taut palate with mild, subtle tannins. With a decade of deliciousness in store and an easy price, this is worth stocking up on.
Bright purple. Mineral-inflected dark fruit and floral scents are energized by an accent of peppery spices. Fleshy, juicy and focused on the palate, offering intense cassis, bitter cherry and licorice flavors that tighten up slowly and pick up a smoky nuance through the midpalate. Densely packed yet lively as well, finishing with very good clarity, mineral thrust and chewy tannins.
