2018 AA Badenhorst Family Wines ‘Sk'windjiesvlei’ Tinta Barocca Swartland
On Kalmoesfontein, Hein and Adi Badenhorst craft wines with immense character, restoring a 19302 cellar. Their Tinta Barocca, akin to if Nebbiolo met Shiraz, is grippy and intense with wild herb, racy acidity, and damson, rose petal, and blackberry notes. It's gloriously chewy and a testament to their traditional winemaking roots.
Vinous
The 2018 Sk’windjiesvlei is simply pure Tinta Barocca aged in two 500-liter barrels. Deep purple in color, it has a tertiary, tree-bark-tinged bouquet with plenty of plump dark plummy and boysenberry fruit, all well defined. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, a slightly powdery texture and a fine bead of acidity toward an intense, powerful finish that takes you to the Capelands via the Douro Valley! Well worth seeking out.
