From Garzón’s free-draining granite sands comes this gorgeously opulent and inviting Tannat, a world (and an ocean) away from the super-tannic, often austere wines of Madiran. Look for notes of crushed boysenberry, red plum, toasted herbs, and a faintly saline, marine note. This is a fabulous wine to pair with hearty fare like smoked short ribs this spring. Napa Cabernet lovers, you’re going to want a case of this deep red seductress and some red meat, stat.
Blessed with pristine views of the Atlantic, an unspoiled ecosystem, and dusty, charismatic back streets, the Punta del Este zone of Uruguay is very quickly becoming a new Côte d’Azur for discerning travelers of means. Nearby, wine entrepreneur Alejandro Bulgheroni established Bodega Garzón, a sustainable, earth-friendly wine estate, restaurant, and private club. Wind and solar power provide 40% of the property’s energy needs, and world-renowned chef Francis Mallman is the Ambassador and Culinary Director for the estate. Quite simply, no expense has been spared to make this winery a showpiece of the southern hemisphere. Blessed with fast-draining granite sands called “balasto,” these rolling hills are heaven for wine grapes, especially Tannat. We were also thrilled to discover some delightful reds like Petit Verdot and Marselan, as well as award-winning Albariño that is some of the best made outside of Spain. We invite you to experience just how sumptuous and luxurious Uruguayan wine can be!
Decanter
The focus here, as it is with all of the Garzón wines, is on fruit expression and terroir rather than wood. It’s a wonderfully stylish expression of the variety that handles its alcohol well, showing flavours of bramble and blackberry with darker liquorice, fine-grained tannins and very subtle vanilla spice. Dark berries with blanched almonds and violets on the nose. Medium to full body. Fine, integrated tannins and a silky texture. Lovely length and juiciness. Drink or hold.

A ripe blackberry aroma mixes with a touch of saline on the nose. The palate of this Tannat from a benchmark vintage is ripe and full in feel. Blackberry jam and spice flavors are ripe and satisfying, while this is warm and complete on the finish.
