Cabernet Sauvignon ripens early on Canon La Gaffeliere’s uniquely warm soil, which adds power and aromatic complexity to Merlot’s opulence. This vintage comes in at 50% Merlot with 35% Cabernet Franc and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, building a wine of terrific elegance and finesse with excellent structure and purity. Restrained, precise, and very long, this will come into its own and really shine after 2024, so don’t neglect the decanter if you simply can’t wait to savor this near perfect St Emilion.
The 2018 Canon La Gaffelière is bright, punchy and full of character, just as it was from barrel. Sage, blood orange, mocha and spice add pretty aromatic top notes to a core of inky red/purplish berry fruit. All the elements are so well balanced in this super-expressive Saint-Émilion. Bright floral and savory Franc notes punctuate the salivating finish, mineral-drenched finish. The 2018 needs a lot of air to open, but when it does, it is dynamite.
