2018 Cliff Lede 'High Fidelity' Proprietary Red Napa Valley

(Net Item - no discounts apply)

The Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon in here are from Cliff Lede’s estate vineyard, “Twin Peaks”, while the Cabernet Franc hails from famed viticulturist David Abreu’s Mondrona Ranch. That’s not a bad starting point! Add in a good long maceration and nearly two years in 66% New French Oak, and it equals a pretty spectacular prop red. The bouquet intrigues with sage, black tea, rhubarb and black licorice. A rush of red currants and fruitcake hit the palate with black truffle notes and tobacco leaf. Salted caramel on the lush, fresh finish competes each satisfying sip. Rock on.

Since founding his namesake winery in 2002, Cliff Lede has put every emphasis on creating a world-class wine estate. With 60 acres under vine throughout the Stags Leap District, a state-of-the-art winemaking facility and a team that includes famed viticulturist David Abreu and winemaker Chris Tynan, every detail has been considered in an attempt to take Bordeaux varietals to a whole new level. A rock and roll attitude that harnesses the energy and spark of the New World while channeling values of the great Old World winemaking properties, his wines are intrinsically connected to the land with a fresh view point that is both progressive and timely. The wine world is changing, and Cliff Lede and his team are at the forefront of the movement.

A blend of 50% Cabernet Franc, 25% Merlot, 23% Cabernet Sauvignon and 2% Petit Verdot, the 2018 High Fidelity Red Blend has a medium to deep garnet-purple color, opening with seductive notes of redcurrant jelly, blackberry coulis, black raspberries and spice cake followed by nuances of red roses, cedar chest and pencil lead with a waft of underbrush. The medium to full-bodied palate quivers with compelling energy, framed by finely grained tannins and bags of freshness, finishing with loads of red fruit and perfumed layers.

Lots of red and black fruits, spring flowers, candied orange, and violet notes emerge from the 2018 Red Blend High Fidelity. Another beautifully balanced, medium to full-bodied, elegant wine in this lineup, it offers nicely integrated acidity, present yet ripe tannins, and a great mid-palate. It’s already hard to resist, yet I see no reason why it wouldn’t continue to drink well for another 10-15 years. The blend is 50% Cabernet Franc, 25% Merlot, 23% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the balance Petit Verdot.
