Dalla Valle’s Oakville terroir, in the capable hands of Andy Erickson and Michel Rolland, can fetch extraordinary prices when it can be found at all. Collina, from younger vines of the legendary hillside blocks, offers a stunning value in a beautiful wine with the classic vibe of the estate, without the $500+ price tag.
Naoko Dalla Valle’s Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc vines, astride terra rossa soils high above the Silverado Trail in Oakville, are the stuff of myth. With a tantalizingly small amount of wine made, nearly all of their production is sold direct to their mailing list. Thankfully Bounty Hunter has been on board from the beginning, and each year we obtain a small parcel to offer you, including the rare and occasionally “perfect” Maya.
Always a red blend, the 2018 Collina is 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Cabernet Franc, and the balance Petit Verdot. This cuvée is always made in a more up-front, fresh, drinkable style compared to the Cabernet Sauvignon and Maya. Rich, mouth-coating currant, dark chocolate, dried herb, and graphite notes all emerge from this beauty, which is full-bodied and has a ripe, sexy texture, great tannins, and just an undeniably delicious style.
