Looking for a Cabernet that competes ‘sip by sip’ with the top wines of Napa Valley without the price tag? Head to Paso Robles and the stunning wines from Daou Winery and you will not be disappointed. The Daou brothers have been producing stellar wines from almost 2200 feet in elevation in the Adelaida disctrict of western Paso Robles. Their ultimate goal: producing “first growth” quality wines that are inspired by many of Bordeaux’s top reds. Would famous winemaker and consultant of many legendary Napa Valley Cabernets, Andre Tchelistcheff, hailed the site the Daou’s developed as “a jewel of ecological elements”. We think they are on to something big here and you should grab some bottles to experience this fantastic Cabernet, now!

Concentrated and vibrant, this Cab oozes blueberries, raspberries and offers lots of depth of flavor with fantastic balance. Blind taste this wine against many others at over twice the price and it will proudly stand on its own. Our little secret from the Central Coast is a must buy! It is a wine that “over-delivers” on every level.

Up on the highest vineyard in Paso Robles, brothers Georges and Daniel Daou have raised the bar for Bordeaux-style wines in central California. The brothers, engineers by trade, were raised in Paris and Cannes before immigrating to the US in their 20s. By their early 30s, they had sold a successful computer networking company, and Daniel promptly retired from tech and threw himself headfirst into learning winemaking. Between 2007 and 2012 the brothers purchased 212 hillside acres on the west side of Paso Robles. Legendary consulting winemaker “Maestro” André Tchelistcheff originally consulted on the first Cabernet vineyards here in the 1960s, and described the Daou’s hill as “A jewel of ecological elements,” referring to the site’s high altitude (2,200 feet, which is where Napa’s famous Howell Mountain tops out), limestone soils (a true rarity in the US), and cool climate, which allows the wines to attain full ripeness and deep colors without having to be acidified. Cab lovers, this is a winery to watch. Here we have unique terroir, fanatically scientific winemakers who use only free-run juice, and reality pricing, not vanity pricing. These three wines would make up a great mixed case to sock away and savor. We concur with this sentiment: “These are easily the greatest Bordeaux blends I’ve tasted from Paso Robles.” – The Wine Advocate.

The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve is a barrel sample blended of 78% Cabernet Sauvignon and 22% Petit Verdot, expected to age 20 months in 50% new French oak. It has a very deep purple-black color and is still very youthful on the nose, offering boisterous aromas of molten chocolate, licorice, blackberry pie, jamon di iberico, marionberry, cedar and sweet oak spices with a mineral streak and a whiff of blackcurrant bud. The palate is medium to full-bodied and silky smooth, with luscious fruits well-tamed by mineral and savory notions. It has very finely grained tannins and fantastic freshness, finishing very long and nuanced.
