In 1954, Hedwig Detert sold the family ranch to buy 50 acres of the To Kalon vineyard from Martin Stelling’s estate, renaming the property ‘Detert Vineyard’ and setting the scene for some seriously good wine. 2018 is a spectacular vintage and this bottle is delicious enough to warrant a case. The bouquet is beautifully floral, with roses and violets in bloom. Long and complex in the mouth, it delivers layers of spice and mineral notes over the cherry fruit core. This is about as classic and elegant as it gets, and it’ll shine even brighter after another year or two in the cellar.
The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon is outrageously beautiful. Rich, vivid and wonderfully deep, the 2018 hits so many high notes. Inky dark fruit, graphite, spice, leather, licorice and expressive earthy nuances are all laced together. In the glass, the 2018 is deep yet also light on its feet, with tremendous flavor intensity and superb balance. It is also one of the very best values in top-flight Napa Valley Cabernet. Don't miss it.
