Once again 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, this makes good on the promise of the State Lane Vineyard. Consulting winemaker Tony Arcudi notes, “Now that the vineyard has matured, the Cabernet vines give us full, complete wines.” Complete and, yes, perfect. 2018 was the first year where phenolics were ahead of the sugar, and the resulting wine speaks for itself with pure perfection in brickhouse form. A swirl of the glass releases black and red currant, plush kirsch, violet and cigar notes. Super firm, ripe tannins lend support to the tightly packed layers of fruit all the way to the long, earthy finish. 400 cases will not be enough to satisfy the world’s thirst for this bottle!
Lou Kapcsándy has seen it all in his 80 years. He was a freedom fighter in the Hungarian revolution of 1956, a refugee from the Soviets, served proudly in the US Army, and had a highly successful career as a chemical engineer before starting his own Bordeaux import company with his son Louis Jr. in 1999. Lou first came to the Napa Valley in the early 1960s, so when in 2000 Yountville’s State Lane Vineyard—the core of so many great Beringer Private Reserve wines—became available, he pounced. He replanted the vineyard to tighter spacing, hired the late Denis Malbec of Château Latour as a consultant, and one of the great wines of the Napa Valley was born.
The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Grand Vin State Lane Vineyard is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon again this year. "Now that the vineyard has matured, the Cabernet vines give us full, complete wines," Kapcsandy's consulting winemaker, Tony Arcudi, said. The wine was aged in French oak, 90% new.
Deep garnet-purple in color, the nose needs a little coaxing to release scents of fresh black and red currant, blackberries and kirsch with touches of unsmoked cigars, cedar chest and violets, plus a waft of chocolate mint. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is built like a brick house with super firm, super ripe tannins and amazing freshness supporting the packed-in layers of black and red fruits, finishing long and earthy/savory. Yep, nailed it. 400 cases were made.
The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Grand Vin more than lives up to its name. In fact, the 2018 might very well be the single most elegant wine I have ever tasted at Kapcsándy. Silky, pliant and beautifully nuanced, the 2018 hits all the right notes. Dark red/purplish fruit, lavender, rose petal, cinnamon and spice all open in the glass, with bright blood orange notes that add vibrancy. Here, too, the tannins are perfectly ripe and silky.
