2018 Substance by Charles Smith Cabernet Sauvignon Columbia Valley

This has all the elements of a classy, classic Cabernet Sauvignon at a shockingly insubstantial price point. Wonderful depths of black cassis, dark cherry and olive character with savory, earthy layers. Full-bodied and rich without succumbing to heaviness, this is an absolute case buy that, according to Jeb Dunnuck, “makes a mockery of just about every other Cabernet Sauvignon in this price range.”

This has the wonderful, dark-fruit and olive character of a ripe cabernet sauvignon, but the polished tannins fold over the wine. It’s full-bodied, yet agile and focused at the finish. Real wine for the money.

I loved the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Cs, which ranks with the finest releases to date for this cuvée. Classy cassis fruits, lead pencil, and tobacco notes all emerge from the glass, and it’s medium to full-bodied, with ripe tannin, integrated oak, and a great finish. It makes a mockery of just about every other Cabernet Sauvignon in this price range. Buy a case and enjoy over the coming 4-6 years, probably longer.

Fruit for this wine comes from five Columbia Valley vineyards. Deep, dense aromas and flavours of black cherry, blueberry, tobacco and earthy notes build, supported by great minerality, refined tannins and a focused finish.

Dark red-ruby. Aromas of cassis, licorice, violet, chocolate mint and menthol. Juicy, penetrating Cabernet with lovely restrained sweetness to its flavors of dark berries, spices, flowers and minerals. Nicely pliant and deep, finishing with supple toothdusting tannins and lovely juicy length. (made from multiple sources)

A softer style made for earlier consumption, the 2018 Cs Cabernet Sauvignon offers delightful red and black fruit on the nose with some oak spices, savory herbs and dusty blackberry essence. Medium-bodied, the wine offers a delightful palate of plum, black raspberry and bitter dark dark chocolate, with hints of mocha on the lingering finish. 235,000 bottles produced. This wine delivers well for the price.
