The well-drained, south facing, sandy soils of Alfaro Vineyards build an enviable structure in this Gruner Veltliner. Between the stainless steel, no malolactic fermentation, and the cool salt spray from the nearby Monterey Bay, this is a mouthwateringly fresh expression that manages to be as complex as it is refreshing. Tart green orchard fruits meet an herbaceous character with a classic Gruner finish of white pepper and stony minerality.
Intriguing aromas of mandarin rind, paraffin, light green herbs and blanched almonds show on the nose of this bottling by the sommelier-turned-winemaker Ted Glennon. There's an oily viscosity to the palate, where those citrus and herb flavors meet with hints of tropical mango and light nuts, proving very complex throughout.
