Bernard Baudry is a producer who can take a lot of credit for Chinon’s notoriety. He returned to the Loire Valley upon completing his viticultural studies in Beaune, and purchased a mere 2 hectares of land in Cravant-les-Coteaux to get started. Today, he and his son, Matthieu, manage vineyards scattered across the region, including parcels sitting on clay and limestone slopes, and some stretching along a sandy, gravel riverbank. This particular cuvee hails from Les Grezeaux, a gravelly parcel over clay-silica subsoil that consistently delivers wines of concentration and dense structure. Matthieu Baudry, currently running most of the operation, suggests his wine is best enjoyed with food – so grab some dinner and dig in.
