2019 Davis Estates Chardonnay Napa Valley
A kiss of French oak smooths out the abundant acidity in this rich and creamy 100% Chardonnay from Hudson Vineyard. The nose opens with honeysuckle and soft tropical fruit before settling into subtle apple and Bartlett pear aromas. The texture is seductive as anything, with flavors of caramelized brown sugar and vanilla wafer swirling around more tropical fruit. The finish is round and silky, thanks to 9 months in 40% new French oak, lingering on a butterscotch note.
Mike and Sandy Davis made a big play with their recent acquisition of some prized land near Calistoga for their up-and-coming winery. And though they may be new to the game (they spent 23 years working together in the technology sector), their instincts and vision will have them atop the mountain in short order. They’re doing things the right way. The 155-acre Calistoga property has been home to wine-growing families since 1873. With an elevation ranging from 50 to 1,400 feet, to say they’re working with a diverse array of soil types and microclimates would be far underselling their options in the vineyard. We got in on this game early. You’d be wise to do the same.

Coming all from the Hudson Vineyard in Carneros, the 2019 Chardonnay has a pretty, clean, incredibly classy and medium-bodied style as well as textbook notes of lemon curd, citrus, white flowers, and honeyed toast. It has nicely integrated acidity, good balance, and is certainly an outstanding wine.

Aromas of baked green apples, white peaches, flint and grated nutmeg. Medium-bodied with silky texture. Pleasantly weighted with a matchstick character. Drink now.
