Domaine Nico is the world’s first extreme-high-altitude parcela Pinot Noir, and a labor of love for Dr. Laura Catena (who named the winery for her daughter). Parcels are tiny with 15 individual microvinifications on deck to achieve just the right effect for each. Yields for Grand Pere, located in a shadier section, are extremely small but the red fruit flavor is intense. Fine, silky tannins support a long finish.
Aromas of dried violets, currants, sour cherries, porcini mushrooms, cocoa and lemon zest. It’s full-bodied with tight, fine-grained tannins framing chewy layers of spiced, dried and ripe fruit. This needs time to open and soften. More fruit-forward than the other four bottlings this year.
