A soft, naturally crushed fruit Merlot with herbs, structure, a bit of gamey/peppery interest and large currant-y berries. This is 100% Merlot and a proper New World style, open and expressive from the outset. Decant this structured beauty for best aromatic development and serve with lamb, rare and well-sauced beef, hearty local fare. This wine matured 16 months in new and neutral French oak barrels.
Leonetti's founder, Gary Figgins, got his start as a winemaker in 1974. All he had was an acre of Cabernet Sauvignon, a bit of Riesling, a hillside above his grandparents' original homestead in Walla Walla, and the memories of the diluted thimblefuls of homemade wine his grandparents, Francis and Rose Leonetti, served him during his childhood. Completely self-taught, Gary's pull-yourself-up-by-your-bootstraps success story is the kind we can't get enough of, and we're not alone - Leonetti has built a reputation for producing some of Washington's most age-worthy red wines. Today, Gary's son Chris serves as President and Winemaking Director for Leonetti. Under his guidance, they're farming fruit in several sub-regions of the Walla Walla Valley, all of which have almost desert like climates and 13,000-year-old Loess soils. Chris feels these sites and soil types are perfect for growing truly age-worthy red wines. They're also committed to farming in a way that will preserve this precious bit of earth for future generations. Their guiding premise after nearly 40 years of winemaking remains focused on producing wines that exceed the previous years' in both quality and character. It takes a lot of dedication and hard work, but this family is up to the task.
