2019 Tor 'Beckstoffer To Kalon' Cabernet Sauvignon Oakville

(Net Item - no discounts apply)

The quality of this vintage will have you wishing the production wasn’t quite so limited. To Kalon is always a star-maker, and 2019 brought the magic in spades. Winemaker Jeff Ames suspects this will be in the running for the best wine thus far from this hallowed site, with all the classic black fruit, earth, and mint dialed up to eleven. Not to be missed.

Proprietor Tor Kenward and his winemaking team, led by Jeff Ames, have been crafting world-class wines at this eponymous estate from its inception. Tor’s 30+ years in the Napa wine business have afforded him relationships with the sort of growers who have lines behind golden velvet ropes begging for their grapes. It pays to know where the valley’s greatest terroirs are in the Napa Valley. Robert Mondavi sited his winery smack in the middle of To Kalon because he, father Cesare, and brother Peter all knew how great the grapes were for Charles Krug in the 1950s. Starting in the 1970s, Andy Beckstoffer began studying and acquiring the finest terroirs in the valley, and strongly advocating for vineyard designation. And of course Tor Kenward, as an executive for Beringer, knew which sites were the most powerful contributors to Beringer Private Reserve Cabernet. Tor has an insider’s knowledge and a rolodex that newcomers simply can’t buy. This is why the wines of TOR are so important to us, and why they demand your attention.

The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer To Kalon is outrageously beautiful. Dark and dense to the core, the 2019 is an explosive wine endowed with remarkable depth. Creme de cassis, lavendar, graphite and inky blue fruit saturate the palate as this sumptuous, dazzling Cabernet captivates all the senses. The 2019 is a wine of tremendous energy and class. This is the first vintage in which the team felt the Pure Magic lots worked best in the To Kalon Wine. Tasting this barrel sample, it's hard to argue with that choice. The 2019 is seriously off the charts.

Wine Advocate

For the first time, Tor's 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer To Kalon includes a fair whack of Cabernet Franc (14%), which winemaker Jeff Ames co-fermented with a portion of the Cabernet Sauvignon. Perhaps that is the source of the wine's delicate herbal shadings, adding complexity and freshness to the black cherry and cassis fruit. Full-bodied, rich, velvety and long, this is really super stuff, with tea-like notes emerging on the finish and lingering silky-dusty tannins.

Jeb Dunnuck

A vineyard that rarely holds things close to its vest, the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard just about jumps from the glass with its brilliant perfume of red, blue, and black fruits as well as flowery incense, Asian spices, tapenade, and iron-like aromas and flavors. One of the more structured, tannic wines in the lineup, it's medium to full-bodied, has a great mid-palate, and serious length on the finish. As with most 2019s, there's plenty of early appeal, yet smart money will give these 3-5 years.

James Suckling

Blueberry, dark chocolate, sandalwood and cedar. Crushed stone, too. Full-bodied with depth of fruit and richness. The tannins are chewy and focused. A leaner yet rich palate that gives a special interpretation of To Kalon. Drink after 2024.
