This contented Turnbull encourages the drinker to pause, take a rest, and inhale those aromas of dusted blackberries and plums among the flowers. This is a story of complexity, delivered with compelling purity and a crisp, refreshing finish. No raging bull here, just a solid friend at a very tame price.
Located in the heart of the renowned Oakville appellation, Turnbull Wine Cellars may not be one of Napa Valley’s flashier wineries, but for over a quarter-century, it quietly has made some of the valley’s finest wines. First established in 1979, the winery was purchased in 1993 by present owner Patrick O’Dell. Patrick has turned up the quality dial by dramatically increasing Turnbull’s estate vineyard acreage. Today, with four superb Oakville district vineyards totaling 185 acres (including its 21-acre home vineyard) Turnbull is an exclusively estate-grown operation. Turnbull’s Oakville vineyards, encompassing a diverse array of exposures, soil types and microclimates, are planted primarily to Bordeaux and Rhône varieties. They supply the winery with the fruit for its superb batch of current releases, an enviable “spice rack” of natural resources. Winemaker Jon Engelskirger, who joined Turnbull Wine Cellars in 1998 after stints at Silverado Vineyards, Robert Pepi, and Hanna, is one of California’s consummate artisan cellar maestros, a fact readily evident upon tasting these exquisite estate-grown gems.
A sold and structured cabernet with blackberries, blueberries, currants and some walnuts. Full-bodied with firm, fine tannins and a long finish. Very attractive now, but it will age nicely.
Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon gives up earthy notes of charcoal, damp earth and wild fungi over a cassis and Black Forest cake core, plus a touch of dried herbs. The medium to full-bodied palate is packed with black fruits, supported by a grainy texture and finishing fruity.
The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley is deep, fleshy and a real delight. Inky dark fruit, licorice, lavender and chocolate are all kicked up in this juicy, flamboyant Napa Valley Cabernet. Pretty floral and savory notes perk up the finish. The Napa Valley Cabernet is gorgeous in 2019. Even better, it should be a tremendous value.
