This one has been steadily creeping up the charts with each vintage, showcasing the skills Don Burns picked up while working with his buddy Justin Smith at Saxum. The last decade has treated Turtle Rock well, and this small family winery is among those ensuring that the Paso Robles reputation just keeps rising. Plum Orchard is a luscious blend of 88% Grenache and 12% Mataro, chock full of elegant fruit and spice. The nose is bold, the body big, but the tannins are satisfyingly fine and soft. This is a wine to slow down with, as each balanced sip invites time to take the night off.

Tasted out of bottle, the 2019 Plum Orchard is even better than the 2018. Mostly Grenache blended with 12% Mourvèdre, it was 50% destemmed and brought up in 50% new, 400-liter barrels. More red fruits, white pepper, rose petals, and spice emerge from this ethereal, seamless, beautifully balanced Grenache that does everything right. Don’t miss it!
