Our 2019 Vine Cliff Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is a Full-bodied wine with crushed baking chocolate, stewed cherries and baking spices on the nose. Dried herbs and firm tannins compliment this wine through a rich finish.
We first noticed the unsung brilliance of Vine Cliff Winery over 15 years ago, when the wine clearly stood out from the pack at the Taste of Oakville AVA tasting, holding its own with the big boys like Harlan, Dalla Valle, and Plumpjack. It’s a historic winery that was famous in San Francisco in the 1890s, but was felled by Phylloxera and Prohibition. Starting in the 1990s, it was restored to even greater glory by the Sweeney family, and today they’re making even better wine than ever. The Cabernet here is from 27 year old vines, high on hillsides just south of Phelps “Backus” vineyard, in the same neighborhood as Dalla Valle, Peter Michael’s “Au Paradis” Vinyeard, and of course Screaming Eagle. It’s a treasure hiding in plain sight, and deserves a corner in your cellar!
Another impeccably made wine, the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley is classy stuff offering textbook darker black fruits, notes of smoke tobacco, chocolate, and integrated oak, medium to full body, and the plushness and opulence of the vintage front and center. Drink it over the coming 10-12 years
I'm happy to say that Vine Cliff's 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon is looking appreciably better now than it did back in January, showing better balance between the dark-fruited notes of black cherries, cassis and cola and the cedar and vanilla-tinged oak. It's still full-bodied but looks more harmonious and less brutally tannic than in my previous tasting. (JC)
