2020 La Pelle 'Bien Nacido' Chardonnay Santa Maria Valley

Harvested from the oldest vines on the famous Bien Nacido Block I, planted in 1973 is an own-rooted section. Warmer conditions in 2020 set the harvest date on September 13th to capture acidity and encourage skin-on-skin maturity. The grapes were pressed whole cluster and immediately barreled down with 15% in new French oak. Native primary and secondary fermentation took place over the next few months, in cold conditions, which promote aromatics and vibrancy in the wine.

Layers of orchard fruit, buttered lemon and honeysuckle emerge from the glass. Austere, citrus-zest, with notes of passion fruit and hint of flint. A salty minerality on the finish with long acidity and reduction. This Chardonnay is a true embodiment of the vineyard and the coastal site. Open a bottle now or enjoy over the next 10+ years.
