Dave Phinney’s hand is most evident in the label of ‘El Coco,’ which reflects part of a Francisco Goya painting, ‘Que Viene de Coco,” and reminds us of his earlier work on another Goya inspired red blend. This estate blend is made from one of the oldest vineyards in the Napa Valley, including a mixture of G.B. Crane’s original head-trained vines from the late 1800’s and “newer” vines from the 1930’s. Made in the style of a field blend, the 2020 is built from 71% Old Vine Zinfandel and 29% Petite Sirah. Boisterous aromatics of violet, blackberry, leather and spice lead to an energetic entry and a palate rife with black plum, dark cherry, ripe raspberry and soft vanilla in a luscious body.
