The history of the classic Martini is as murky as its “dirty” variety looks in the glass. Some say it was invented in the 1860s in San Francisco, others trace its origins to a bartender in Martinez, CA, or there are those who believe it all started by a small vermouth producer in Piedmont, Italy named Alessandro Martini. By 1922 the recipe had been standardized to a measure of gin and splash of vermouth, served ice-cold in a cocktail glass – later known as the “Martini glass.”
