In 1850, Jean Victor Laroche, a vineyard laborer, bought his first vineyard, not far from the village of Chablis. Passed along over generations, the Laroche holdings gradually expanded, and by the mid-1960s, totaled about 15 acres.
By the early 1960s, as the Chablis appellation began to expand thanks to better frost-protection techniques, young Michel Laroche, then only a teenager, foresaw that the appellation was going to grow significantly. He saw his opening and decided to dedicate his life to winemaking. After getting a degree in oenology in Dijon, Michel joined his dad Henri in the winery, and over the next 20 years they expanded their holdings dramatically. Fast forward to the present day, and Domaine Laroche is a large multinational wine firm with vineyard holdings in Chablis, Languedoc, Chile, and South Africa.
