Kiwi winemaker Nick Goldschmidt started Goldschmidt Vineyard to highlight the distinct, site-specific characters of vineyards in the Napa and Alexander Valleys, vineyards like the Game Ranch Vineyard in the heart of Napa Valley’s prestigious Oakville appellation. Located on a former river bottom on the eastern bench of the Silverado Trail, the three-acre vineyard’s boulder-filled, well draining soils and stressful, low moisture environment coax incredible concentration from its Cabernet Sauvignon vines.
Nick’s been making wines since the 80s. He worked at some of New Zealand’s most noted wineries before expanding his range to include Australia, Chile and finally California. In 1990, Nick and his wife Yolyn settled in Healdsburg and Nick spent 13 years turning Simi Winery into a premium Cabernet property. Nick continues his work today as winemaker for over half a dozen properties, but Nick calls the Goldschmidt Vineyard Series, “the most important that I make.” He funnels his passion for single vineyard Cabernet into his namesake label, and he’s completely hands-on.
