Chateau Haut-Sarthes

In our never-ending quest to find great stuff we’ve looked a little east to the town of Bergerac where the wines and the land share many of Bordeaux’s defining characteristics. Located a mere 30 miles from St. Èmilion, on the same “right bank” of the Dordogne River, Bergerac’s vineyards enjoy soils with high iron content – which is what the folks at Château Haut-Sarthes say lends the wines their rich structure, supple flavor and their characteristic age-worthiness. The genius behind Château Haut-Sarthes is Daniel Hecquet, who’s not only an award-winning vigneron, he’s got street cred and dirt under his nails. His enology skills landed him a stint at Château d’Yquem, but these days he’s focused on producing the optimum wines from his family’s vineyards and he’s nippin’ at Bordeaux’s heels in a big way.
