Unoaked or “naked” Chardonnays are becoming quite the rage these days, but before they were the trend, Kopriva was making its singular wine – an oak free Chardonnay from Carneros – with serious style points. Acquired by the McMonigle family in the late 1990s, Cassidy Ranch vineyard had long been one of the Carneros region’s most sought-after sources for Chardonnay grapes. The Mediterranean-like climate, cooling Pacific fogs, and shallow clay and loam soils help to grow very expressive grapes, and this wine is a blend from a few choice sites within Carneros. Stylistically, the folks at Kopriva decided early on not to muddy the flavors of their wine with the use of oak, however, the wine is left on its lees for about four months so that the crisp fruit flavors are backed with enough of a weighty feel to glide across the palate. The Kopriva label is a true family endeavor, with the entire clan running every aspect of the business, from 3 a.m. tractor work and irrigation repair to midnight harvests. A farmer first and foremost, Myles McMonigle has perfected the art of “growing great wine.” Passion projects like this are exactly why we got in this business in the first place.
