If Bounty Hunter had a “Biggest Flavor Bang for the Buck” list, Château de Mattes-Sabran might top it. Located in Corbières, a large wine-growing district near the Mediterranean coast in France’s Languedoc region, the estate is run by Jean-Luc Brouillat, who continues a family winemaking tradition dating back to 1733. Jean-Luc crafts his extraordinary wines from estate vines planted in poor, chalky, rock-strewn soils on hot, dry hillsides. Much like the red wines of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Mattes-Sabran’s blends of Syrah, Grenache and Mourvèdre are deeply concentrated and deliciously layered, with wonderful freshness and purity.
