Saddleback

Still cranking on all cylinders at over 70 years old, 2012 was Nils Venge’s 42nd harvest in the Napa Valley. Like his son Kirk, this larger than life Danish-American couldn’t make a subtle, demure wine if he tried. Nils’ claim to fame is making the first 100-point wine in the Napa Valley: the 1985 Groth Vineyards Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon. Started in 1980, Saddleback rests atop a prime cut of Oakville, on a street called Money Road, right near Groth and Plumpjack. The wines are typically a blend of these estate vineyards and purchased fruit from Nils’ many prime contacts.
