Dan and Margaret Duckhorn’s early fascination with Merlot set them apart from most California wineries of their time. That interest drew Dan to the Old World, where he spent some time tasting in Pomerol, Saint-Emilion and at Chateau Pétrus. Studying the French techniques, he became determined to develop a premium Merlot in Napa Valley. With Three Palms Vineyard on his side, how could he fail? Duckhorn’s inaugural vintage in 1978 included just 800 cases each of their now legendary Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. In the forty years since, they’ve established Duckhorn as one of Napa Valley’s premier producers.
