Compass Box Peat Monster Arcana piques the team's curiosity about how smoky whisky and French Oak interact. Starting with a cask strength blend of the original Peat Monster they filled three once-used casks capped with heavily toasted French Oak heads. The Compass Box team was wowed by the results, discovering that two of the casks offered extra Creaminess and toasty spice, while the third added a cocoa note and additional fruitiness.
The majority of the recipe comprises waxy and delicately smoky malt whisky from the Talisker Distillery, with small amounts of malt from Ardbeg and Miltonduff. This combination lends flavors of dense peat and a charming fruitiness, respectively. One of our favorite limited releases in Compass Box's illustrious history.
There are some people in the spirits business who are cut from a different cloth, Compass Box's founder and master blender John Glaser is one of those folks. After many years in the wine trade, he entered the Scotch whisky business with Johnnie Walker, where he honed his palate and helped develop the renowned Green and Gold labels. Somewhat frustrated with the limitations of the corporate world, he felt compelled to follow his passion for making great blends. He started Compass Box to, as he states, "nurture the roots of tradition in order to grow the possibilities." An artist, visionary and one hell of a whisky "blendologist," he has successfully conjured up some of the biggest, baddest and sexiest drams we've tasted.
