This mezcal is bright and inviting showing ripe tropical fruits of kiwi, mango and persimmon with underlying tones of lime zest, savory pepper spice, minerality and wisps of smoke throughout. A true hidden gem.
Nestled in the hills around 50 miles south of Central Oaxaca City is a hamlet called Yogana. It is here that Felíx Ramírez Mendez plies his trade as a farmer, growing a multitude of crops on his land including agave, squash, beans and maiz. In addition, Felíx is a second-generation mezcalero who produced his first batch of mezcal more than 30 years ago. The agave he harvests is pit-roasted for three days, crushed using the traditional tahona method, and fermented for 3-5 days prior to a single distillation in his 400-liter alambic still built from copper and brick. While this is a part-time endeavor, he has mastered this craft over the years and is producing small batches of outstanding mezcal every year. His focus is on ensuring that the resulting spirit is of the highest quality and adheres to local traditions. This batch is the first commercial bottling in his 30 years of producing agave, we are lucky to have a little to share with our club and are excited for you to try it!
