2014 Chalk Hill 'Estate Red' Chalk Hill
Chalk Hill AVA, you trickster, you are neither chalk, nor merely a hill! What looks like chalk is indeed compressed volcanic ash, and much of the AVA is a valley! The beauty of Chalk Hill is that it's warm enough to produce top-class Cabernet. And 2014 was kind to this warm corner of the Russian River Valley. Chalk Hill's 2014 red is a home run too, but if you wait for the score, you may miss it.
Comprised of 48% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Malbec, 16% Petit Verdot, 8% Merlot, and 5% Syrah, this wine has supple tannins, and a wealth of black fruit like blackcurrant and black cherry, not to mention tobacco and chocolate. With so many top-class Bordeaux and Napa Valley Cabernets headed north of $100, this cellar-worthy red is most attractive at $60. A case buy is a smart investment in pleasure for the "future you."
Founded in 1972, Chalk Hill Estate made their name with Chardonnay, but in 2010 they made a splash in the pages of the Wine Advocate with their 2007 Proprietary Red, scoring 95 points. To this day it remains one of the finest wines to emerge each year from the Chalk Hill AVA. In fact, you flipped for the 2013 Chalk Hill red wine, which sold out in a flash thanks to its luxurious profile and its nice 96-point score from the Wine Advocate.About Chalk Hill
