2013 Franciscan 'Magnificat' Proprietary Red Napa Valley

Avg. Rating:

2013 Franciscan 'Magnificat' Proprietary Red Napa Valley

Comprised of 73% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Merlot, 2% Malbec, and 1% Cabernet Franc, the winery calls the wine "Deep scarlet with aromas of dark cherry, plum, baking spices and coffee that weave into complex aroma. The flavors open with ripe plum and black currant. Impressive structure is readily apparent in a dense, full body with refined tannins. Extensive finish blends cassis with anise, tobacco, cocoa, and vanilla." Antonio Galloni confirms the wine's fruity, open personality: "juicy, forward and expressive, all qualities that will allow it to drink well upon release. The flavors are bold, ripe and racy throughout, but all the elements are very nicely put together."

Franciscan is one of those Napa Valley legends that proudly asserts itself on Napa's iconic Highway 29. Located in Saint Helena, the winery was founded in 1973 by Justin Meyer (the same guy who helped start Silver Oak) a few decades before much of the valley was parceled out into smaller sub-AVA's as it is today. From the start, the forward thinking winemaking team at Franciscan saw potential in certain areas whose grapes were of the highest quality. Oakville was one of those early discoveries, and they began making wines from their Oakville estate in 1975. They also pioneered the art of blending with both different grape varieties or small lots from highly distinctive vineyards throughout the valley. They ultimately created one of the first California Meritage wines that would come to be known as "Magnificat." While Cabernets and other lush reds are still their bread and butter, they've created quite the following for their Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc too. Jut another example that this illustrious house is no one trick pony.
