Bruichladdich 'The Botanist' Gin Islay

Avg. Rating:
(2)

If you thought the Scots only made whisky, boy were you wrong. Distilling legend Jim McEwan is at it again with a small-batch gin made from wild native island botanicals and the peat bogs on the Atlantic shores of Islay. This truly exotic cocktail is 'slow-simmer' distilled in the infamous Lomond pot still known as 'Ugly Betty.' Betty prefers to work at low pressure and won't be rushed, so the precious botanicals are slowly and gently coaxed into releasing their complex, signature aromatics. The payoff is vibrant aromas of juniper, coriander, wildflowers and citrus with a crisp and refreshing palate that's delicious served up or equally delightful when accompanied by quality tonic. A rare treat for the gin enthusiast.

For many, the word Islay is synonymous with peat smoke, however, such is not always the case. Bruichladdich's Master distiller Jim McEwan, an Islay native with over forty years of experience, has skillfully created a line of whiskies in an array of styles and flavors that are contrary to the region's status quo. Though some are made from peated malt, a majority are not and are more focused on the delicate nuances that come with age and barrels selected from around the world. The true "spirit" of Bruichladdich (pronounced brew-ik-lad-e) starts with organic and heritage barleys grown on selected farms for ultimate individuality. Microchip-free distilling in tall narrow-necked stills, followed by island maturation and natural bottling, producing some of the purest single malts in all of Scotland. From there, Jim selects wine casks from around the globe and when the whisky is ready, he'll rest it in the right barrel for a few month just to add another level of flavor.

as previously described, a not overwhelming, refined, and subtle taste of juniper. i like gin but often find it too overpowering. A nice surprise from the boys of Islay.
