Tepextate often produces one of the brighter, more floral, styles of mezcal. It takes as long as 25 years for this massive plant to mature enough to produce a quality distillate. It's worth the wait. Rey Campero means "king of the countryside", and is a reference to the landscape, - which is comprised of steep slopes and canyons that make harvesting agave quite treacherous - its terroir, the hard work that is required, and resulting superior quality of the mezcals produced by this family. Led by Maestro Mezcalero Romulo Sanchez Parada, they distill mostly wild agave from the hillsides of Candelaria Yegole, which is around a two-hour drive traversing dusty roads southwest of Oaxaca City. As with many smaller Palenques in Oaxaca, the work is done collectively, from planting, to harvest, roasting and distillation. These businesses are often the heart of a community, and it's important for them to give back in many ways, be it through education, mentorship, and other forms of assistance. This is the soul of an industry.
