Wemyss Malts "Peat Chimney" 12yr Blended Malt Whisky Islay

What's in a name? In this case, everything! If you like 'em packed with smoldering peat, anise, and tobacco, this is for you. Hints of salty sea air and ginger tame the aggressive peat as waves of toffee and malt join in on the finish. Come in here dear boy and have a cigar... you're gonna go far!

Though Wemyss (pronounced weems) is a relatively new player (founded in 2005) in the whisky game who have taken independent bottling and blending to another level, their connection to Scotch has existed since the 19th century. John Haig built his distillery here, on the shores of Fife, and the barley grown on the estate has been prized since it was first harvested. Maybe it's the royal name (Wemyss castle has been in the family for more than 6 centuries) that helped open some doors, whatever it was, they've had access to some of the best malts available in Scotland. Producing a variety of blended whiskies as well as single cask releases, Wemyss is one brand connoisseurs will become very familiar with over the next several years. In their relentless pursuit of quality, Wemyss has always tried to make their Scotches accessible to non-expert consumers. The spirits are named after their dominant traits to provide insight as to what the consumer is about to imbibe. Brilliant!

    Comment:
The bouquet is definitely peaty The taste is an overpowering sweetness reminisced of over-rippen garden fruit medley which tends to linger and over-shadows everything else Best consumed with plenty of water and ice

    Comment:
I am not a fan of all peaty scotches, but this one really stood out. I was on a tasting in Scotland and had about 30 different scotches over the weekend, including Peat Chimney. This is one of three that I bought, and the only peaty one. I found the flavor to be smoky and well balanced, without the overpowering spoonful-of-dirt flavor I get from other peaty scotches.
