2013 Brainchild Red Napa Valley
The story of how Brainchild came about is best told by Patrick McNeil, its founder: "At some point after my college career, I found myself traveled and skied out, broke, and I still drove a van. My father looked at me and said, almost in slow motion, "Get a job." And then: "Use your imagination." He was one of the few pioneers in the 1960's and 70's that brought the renaissance of wine growing back to the great old, storied sites of the Napa Valley. And my early years at Stag's Leap Winery left me with Petite Sirah as my childhood drink of choice. And so I have craved it ever since."
So of course the 2013 Brainchild Red is a big wine, dominated by 75% Petite Sirah, 13% Zinfandel, and 12% Grenache, from Kenefick Ranch in Calistoga, Muhlner Steps in St. Helena, and Somerston Vineyard, east of St. Helena.
With only 200 cases produced, this is a generous mouthful of wine, with aromas of dark fruit followed by lighter notes of rhubarb and cranberry. Tobacco, pie crust, and a very slight fruit roll-up character make this a compelling proposition for a weeknight bacon cheeseburger!
