2006 Caiarossa 'Caiarossa' Tuscany IGT
We were totally smitten with the 2006 Caiarossa, which now has 10 years of bottle age. This impressive, biodynamic estate is just 30 minutes to the north of Bolgheri on the Tuscan coast, and the wine is a little lighter and even more graceful in style than its more famous neighbors to the south.
This is a remarkably fine and harmonious blend of Sangiovese, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache, Syrah, Petit Verdot and Mourvèdre. The Wine Spectator called it "A fascinating blend, with a bouquet of flowers, berries, nuts and mineral. Full-bodied, with chewy tannins and pretty fruit... this is going to develop wonderfully." If you're looking for an Italian red to blow you and your guests away TONIGHT, this is it. Soft, with sweet tobacco, cherries, and spice cake, this is a tractor-beam of a wine.
