2009 Colpetrone Sagrantino Montefalco
In an appellation that has seen pricing creep ever-upward in the last 10 years, Còlpetrone is such a refreshing change. Gutsy, with loads of dusty black fruit like olallieberry, followed by road tar, anise, and a touch of mint. If you’ve never tasted a Sagrantino, do yourself a favor and check this one out. It’s a tiny appellation with one of the most thrilling black grape varieties in Italy.

Prized for wine production since Roman times, Montefalco DOCG in Umbria's Perugia region has beautifully steep slopes of vines and olive trees dotted with terra cotta roofed buildings. Transporting one back in time, Colpetrone focuses their winemaking on the ancient and truly native Italian varietal Sagrantino. This is a grape like no other and these guys are dialing up the intensity of the already incredibly power-packed grape by pruning well below the legally allowed limit. They've recently received an infusion of cash from a big new buyer and it's showing in the quality of their goods.About Colpetrone
