2014 The Crossings Pinot Noir Marlborough
"The Crossings" refers to a point in the fast-flowing Awatere river that early pioneers used to cross near Marlborough, in the northeastern corner of New Zealand's South Island.
Here we smell notes of violets and black plums, red roses, and barrel spices. Only 20% of the barrels this wine was raised in were new. This is a terrific introduction to New Zealand Pinot Noir, and its distinctive ruby-red fruit that is like no other Pinot Noir on earth. A natural pairing? That great export of New Zealand, a slab of roast lamb.

The Crossings is a project of the Yealands Group, founded by entrepreneur Peter Yealands, who first made his name and fortune in 1971 by winning a license to farm mussels, which are today a key export of New Zealand.
The name refers to a point in the fast-flowing Awatere river that early pioneers used to cross near Marlborough, in the northeastern corner of New Zealand's South Island.
The winemaker here is Jeff Fyfe, since 2009. Jeff has worked in California (Williams-Selyem) and Burgundy (Jadot). Both Fyfe and his boss Peter Yealands are obsessively dedicated to sustainability, and in fact their winery is a net-zero carbon emitter.About The Crossings
