2009 Gulfi Nerobaronj Nero d'Avola Sicily
NeroBaronj ("The Baron's Vines") comes from 30 year old Nero d'Avola vines in the Val di Noto, between the communes of Pachino and Noto in southeastern Sicily-further south, in fact, than Tunis. The soils here are white with limestone, which imparts a certain delicacy and nobility to the wine. We smelled unctuous blackberry fruit, espresso, dark chocolate powder, dried ancho chiles, plums, and prunes. The wine has a dried-fruit, apassimento quality similar to Amarone, but it's brighter and lighter on its feet.
Vinous, which underrated the wine by about 5 points, described "superb definition to the red fruit, herb and mineral flavors. This racy, sleek, long wine leaves the taste buds vibrating." Do as we did, and snag a six-pack of this one, which we gave our rare, and unanimous, three-star rating.
Gulfi is a 100% organic estate in the sweltering, windblown, southeastern corner of Sicily, beautiful and historic, and dotted with palm trees and citrus orchards. Here in the Noto valley, very close to the Mediterranean, the Nero d'Avola grape is king. If there are any better examples of this cultivar, we would love to taste them.About Vini Gulfi
