2013 La Jota Merlot Howell Mountain
Chris Carpenter is something of a Napa Valley Superman. The more we read about him, the more we realize how little we actually accomplish each day by comparison. The guy makes wine at five wineries: Lokoya, Cardinale, La Jota, Mt. Brave and Hickinbotham, the last of which is 8,000 miles away from Napa, in McLaren Vale, South Australia.
The mountain Merlot Chris makes at La Jota is one of the most serious and age-worthy examples we can think of. Parker says this wine is "dense and exhibits loads of mocha, lead-pencil shavings, black cherry and Asian plum spices as well as some sauce-like characteristics in a full-bodied, opulent, very fleshy and dense style. This is stick-to-your-ribs, mouth-coating Merlot to drink over the next 12-15 years."
