2013 Maimai Creek Syrah Hawke's Bay New Zealand
The name Maimai derives from a small stream that used to run alongside of the eastern boundary of their Meeanee property. In times of drought this creek was often a source of water for stock and water fowl. At some time in the early 1960's a maimai (hunting blind) was built and the creek became known as Maimai Creek.
Fruit for this Syrah comes from their vineyard in the Bridge Pa Triangle west of Hastings where the free draining stony soils provide a microclimate ideal for growing Syrah fruit. Cropped at low levels, this is a blend of three Syrah clones, each managed to maximize the individual traits they provide. White pepper, raspy raspberry tones, and red plums are all out in force on this wine. There is also a strong vein of gravelly minerality that reminds you you're in the cool stony soils of Hawke's Bay.
