2010 Marques de Riscal 'Baron de Chirel' Reserva Rioja
Marqués de Riscal is one of Rioja's oldest properties. Founded in Elciego (Álavesa) in 1858 by Guillermo Hurtado de Amézaga, from the outset it has been a point of reference in traditional, high-quality Rioja winemaking. Today the wines are mostly made using the traditional Rioja formula - long aging in old American oak, however the "Baron de Chirel" cuvée is treated somewhat differently.
"Barón de Chirel" was launched in 1986 as the result of experimental production using a selection of grapes from very old vines, between 80 and 110 years' old, with parsimonious yields. This wine is produced on a very limited scale and only in the best harvests, in which the character of the vineyard, the soil and the variety are expressed as part of a single, harmonious whole. The wine is then aged for 20 months in French oak barriques. This 2010, from a splendid vintage, is absolutely ravishing and spicy, a great place to begin your love affair with Rioja.
