2012 Mount Eden Vineyards 'Estate' Cabernet Sauvignon Santa Cruz Mountains
Mt. Eden is a well-kept secret in the firmament of American Cabernet Sauvignon. High on a ridge overlooking Saratoga and the Silicon Valley, this has been a jewel in the Santa Cruz Mountains' "Chaine d'Or" since its founding in 1945 by the legendary Martin Ray.
This property is notable for its clone of Cabernet Sauvignon, taken from Emmett Rixford’s historic La Questa Vineyard in Woodside, California, and rumored to have come from Chateau Latour in the 1880s. This is powerful, nuanced Cabernet with aromas of boysenberry, black cherry, black fig, pencil lead and cigar box. Put it in a cool corner of your cellar and forget about it for 10 years!
Mount Eden is an historic California winery icon. Founded in 1945 by Martin Ray, the Santa Cruz mountain estate staked its reputation on and made its name by planting Cabernet Sauvignon high atop the wild, infertile Franciscan shale slopes of the Santa Cruz Mountains. Although ownership has changed over the years, the quality of the wine has (mostly) remained consistent. That's in large part because winemakers like Jeffrey Patterson have always zeroed-in their focus on growing great wines, not designing them in the cellar. Jeffrey farms 40 acres, all of which are planted on eastern facing slopes at least 1,000 feet above the fog line and benefit from the Pacific coast moisture while enjoying fog-free days. Their small production wines distinctly speak of their property's sun-drenched mountain terrain.About Mount Eden
